REALITY THERAPY

WHAT IS REALITY THERAPY?

Reality Therapy is the application of counselling using Dr. William Glasser’s Choice Theory. The essence of reality therapy is to help people self-evaluate their behaviours and help them gain more effective control of their lives. THE REALITY THERAPY MANAGER, LEADER, AND TEACHER ENDEAVOURS TO:

  1. Focus on the present and avoid discussing the past because all human problems are caused by unsatisfying present relationships.

  2. Avoid discussing symptoms and complaints as much as possible since these are the ways most deal with choosing to deal with unsatisfying relationships.

  3. Understand the concept of Total Behaviour, which means focus on what the individual can do directly – acting and thinking. Spends less time on what they cannot do directly which is feelings and physiology. One’s total behaviour can be changed by thinking and doing.

  4. Avoid criticizing, blaming and/or complaining and help the individual do the same. It is important to avoid any external control behaviours that ultimately destroy relationships.

  5. Remain non-judgmental and non-coercive, and build a model relationship with the individual by practicing the seven connecting habits: supporting, encouraging, listening, accepting, trusting, respecting, and negotiating differences.

  6. Help individuals re-organize their behaviour and make specific workable plans that help them get closer to what they want.

  7. Be patient and hopeful.
